Virginia was a Therapist at Sandstone Psychology during Winter 2026.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
As an intern at Sandstone, I met with clients of different backgrounds and different presenting problem and helped them as their therapist. It was a great opportunity to get experience working with different populations, not just students at BYU. It was impactful for me to feel like I was using my skills that I learned in my program to better the community.
What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I learnt more about how insurance works in the real world and the importance of diagnosis for clients to get insurance coverage. I learnt more how to work with different providers and manage transferring cases.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
My internship experience has strengthened my resolve to provide quality therapy to a variety of populations. It has made me that much more exacted to continue to work with couples in the therapy room and further research in my upcoming PhD program.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
I feel like I'm in a sacred space when I meet with clients. They share with me their pain and heartache, their doubts and questions. I've cried with my clients. I've laughed with my clients. I share in their triumphs and hardships. Many times I've prayed to receive inspiration to know how to help and guide my clients. Looking back I can see God bringing different interventions to mind during my sessions. I can see God increasing my capacity to love His children.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
Yes! I loved working at Sandstone as I met incredible clients and well as supportive staff. I learnt so much from the trainings they provided at the clinic that helped me better my clinical skills and competence.
