Tori was an intern for Self-Reliance Services in South America during Fall 2024.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
I did everything under the umbrella of Self-Reliance Services. In Paraguay, I taught English and Self-Reliance classes, trained self-reliance stake specialists, taught about programs and helped others to apply, trained volunteers as employment coaches, and helped returned missionaries adjust to normal life through course changes and more specific programs.
What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I was very surprised by how the history, culture, and politics influenced the people in Paraguay. That was really cool to see. I also learned a lot about office work and delegation, and the role of an intern in the office as well.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
I'm looking into BYU Law school right now and have applied to another internship with Church History in Latin America.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
I felt like I was able to learn a lot about myself as a person and grow individually as I met and came to know the people of Paraguay. I was really touched by their kindness and loved laughing with them. I felt like I was really able to explore the beautiful country and come to understand the people on a deeper level due to travels, conversations, and course studies. I read about the Triple Alliance War and its effects but also go to see and hear from many Paraguayans how that war still impacts them and their psyche today. I also felt like I was able to advocate for my personal development and explore possible careers. I was able to attend Court hearings and am in contact with advisors about BYU Law School
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
I would, this internship provides valuable experiences working in a foreign office and also allows time to explore.
Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?
Money/funding was pretty stressful since there's no pay for the internship and quite a bit of money came out of pocket, but I did receive some financial aid.
