Savannah Bullock: Communication Disorders

Savannah was a speech pathology intern for Intermountain Medical Center during Winter 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I spent 10 weeks working alongside a certified speech language pathologist on the inpatient rehab floor at Intermountain Medical Center. I helped assess and treat patients who had recently had strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or other medical problems that impacted their swallowing or cognitive functioning.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned a lot about what other healthcare professionals do who worked with patients. It was interesting to learn about their roles since we work so collaboratively to help the patient get better.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I went into this internship fully expecting to seek out full time employment at this location following the conclusion of the internship. I did love my time there enough that I want to work in this setting in the future, but being there also taught me that it is not the right place for me right now.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

This internship helped me to understand trials I had in the past better, because I felt clear revelation that God had allowed those difficult things to happen to me so I could have real empathy for my patients during this internship.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I absolutely would recommend this to other students! They will be exposed to so much and it will really help them figure out what they want to do with their career in the future. The supervisors there are also so great!

So grateful that my internship has helped me finally reach graduation!
