Ryder was an intern for The Scottish Parliament during Fall 2025.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
During my internship in the Scottish Parliament, I worked with large sets of data and survey responses that needed to be condensed into clear, understandable formats. The information found in the data sets varied on topic, such as, environment, health care, energy projects, etc. This task required me to identify what type of information would be useful and what would not. I drew on the knowledge and methods I learned in my political science classes. My coursework taught me to analyze complex material and identify the most important themes. Using those skills, I created visual tables and summaries from the raw data. I often received positive feedback from my supervisor about my results and ability to differentiate the data into what was most important. This process helped me strengthen my confidence in handling professional projects. This experience has also shown me how skills I am learning in a classroom setting can be applied to real-world settings.
What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I was not anticipating this internship enhancing my professional development as much as it has. This impact was seen, felt, and commented on by my supervisors and coworkers. The positive feedback I received helped me to continue the cycle of gathering information to learn how to be the most effective member of a team and how to succeed in a professional environment. I think that the internships offered through BYU should be taken by every student because it has helped me know how I can thrive in a workplace environment post-graduation. I have been able to learn how I can continue to progress post-graduation by advocating for my own professional development no matter where I may be working.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
I have found that I am interest in working in politics. I came to love interacting with people and different government organizations to find a common solution to complex issues.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
My internship experience ultimately led to a personal sense of inspiration by showing me, how capable I am of contributing to meaningful work. Living and working in Scotland also broadened my understanding of the world and my place in it. I learned to engage more openly with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. The combination of intellectual growth, cultural exposure, and hands on responsibility helped me see that I can continue progressing after graduation by intentionally seeking opportunities to learn, connect, and contribute.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
