Morgan Kurth: Data Science

Morgan interned for Utah Valley University as a Utah Valley University Men's Hockey Team Statistician during Winter Semester 2023.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I served as the team statistician for the UVU Men's Ice Hockey team. I created my own program which recorded statistics during games and summarized them. I then analyzed this data and wrote reports for coaching staff to inform their coaching strategies and decisions. I also worked with broadcast and marketing teams to use statistics to elevate the level of the organization's media output.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I came to find interest in other fields in addition to my own, such as management, which eventually led me to pursue a business minor. I never would have expected to study business if it were not for the exposure which I had to that field in this internship.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

Yes, I have decided that I would like to pursue some business courses in addition to my statistics degree because of the influence of my supervisor and his experiences which he shared with me about working in my intended field.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I found a field in which I am comfortable and have much interest. This helped me gain confidence as I worked doing something that I love, and going to work did not feel like something I dreaded. Finding a passion which has tangible results and feedback which shows the value of my work was very impactful and empowering.

Would you recommend this internship to other students? I

would recommend this internship to other students if they are willing to be flexible, because there were many things required of me that were outside of my field of study. I drew upon many of my personal experiences with the field of ice hockey for a significant portion of the work I did. For students without this intuition or background it would likely be overwhelming and ineffective as a learning experience that betters the company and intern.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

I am grateful for the weekly summaries required by my internship course because it helped me recognize the value in the work I did each week.
