Student Spotlights

Michelle Clyde: Illustration

Michelle interned for Rose Datoc Dall as an artist assistant during spring/summer 2022 semester.

Describe a day in your life as an intern.

Each time I interned for Rose I would drive 30 minutes down to Woodland Hills to Rose's Studio. This summer she was preparing for a workshop as well as an online workshop for the VisionX conference. I would help her with different tasks to prepare for those workshops as well as other things she needed including editing photos, editing her website, setting up for filming, hanging artwork in the studio, setting up equipment for photographing reference photos, and stretching canvases.

What industry/job specific skills did you learn?

I learned the tasks it takes to run a business as an artist. Running a website, running workshops, selling prints, originals, online marketing, etc.

What is one thing you learned from this internship experience that could be applied to other settings?

There were a few hiccups during this internship because Rose's son came home from his mission, she got COVID, and she left town, so that took 3 weeks away from my internship time. I also had some serious family things come up that were taking my time and attention. I had to negotiate to shorten the hours that I signed up for because there was no way I could get the original 135 hours needed. This experience taught me that life will always throw unexpected things at you and to not get worked up about the present because I knew in the end that things would work out. I think it's important to have a broad perspective no matter what happens in life to know that stressful moments will pass.

What was your favorite part of your internship experience?

My favorite part of the internship was getting a peek into Rose's life. She is an amazing artist and I really enjoyed getting to know her and seeing how she works.

How did this internship experience affect your future goals?

I have goals to set up a website and create a professional looking business inspired by how Rose does hers.

How did you find your internship?

Rose presented for the professional practices class and mentioned she was taking interns so I got her contact information.

How did this internship experience contribute to your growth?

Personally I think it helped me work through the quarter life crisis I was facing since walking in graduation in April. I had no idea how to start becoming a full time artist and I'm so grateful for this experience to give me the insight I needed.
