Melissa was an intern for Lightbox during Fall 2024.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
We went to Lightbox Expo in California and got to learn a lot from industry professionals - from technique to information on jobs, there was a huge amount of knowledge to be learned.
What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
No matter what your life story looks like, and no matter what hardships it took for you to get where you are, you have a story to tell. Your unique experience will resonate with others. Be brave enough to create and share what you see.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
I've actually broadened my sights in terms of possible careers. My dream is to work on the animation industry, but as an artist it's also a good idea to look for side gigs or other jobs that might help on the sides! Like board games, toys, advertising, etc. Lightbox showed me this!
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
To be surrounded by thousands of other artists, and to meet artists that have worked on some of your favorite movies or shows was amazing. Every single person I met was so kind and excited to talk about their craft and share their knowledge. Leaving Lightbox left me inspired to go out and become better in my own work.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
Completely. Lightbox is a fantastic opportunity for everyone interested in the artistic side of the entertainment industry. I met so many of my heroes and artists I've been following for years, and the bonds and memories I've created are unforgettable.
Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?
Go out there and share your work! Become better and show others what you can do! Rejections are never the end of the road. This experience really helped me see that and reminded me that the journey will get us where we need to go.
