Megan Brugger: Communications

Megan was a digital intern for ABC4 News during Summer Term 2023.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

As a digital intern, I worked on site producing. I published nearly five articles per shift -- more than 100 throughout the entire internship. I also worked on The Justice Files doing investigative crime work, which was one of my favorite parts.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

Better organizational skills -- I thought I had it all figured out, and I was quickly humbled. I learned how important it is to document everything and be able to access it quickly. Sometimes I was scanning hundreds of pages of documents, but I learned how to manage that well.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I used to think I wanted to leave Utah as soon as I graduated, but being able to cover the community helped me see that Utah can actually be pretty cool. I'll be staying in the state a little while longer, and I'm happy about that.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

This internship helped me believe in myself better. There were many times I felt inadequate, like I was asking too many questions, or that I simply was not catching on quick enough. However, I found out that the opposite was true. I learned to trust myself and allowed myself to be proud of my work.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes, in a heartbeat! ABC4 News allowed me to explore several different opportunities, letting me jump right in with real-world work.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

I could not have been luckier.
