Maysen Fielding: Computer Science

Maysen was an intern for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during Spring 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I worked on a team migrating the churches banking system from Java to React. Some of my tasks involved automating unit tests to ensure that the teams rapid pace of development would be less hindered by bugs.

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

Although I had anticipated the chance to learn more about technologies and code, I was pleasantly surprised to realize how much I learned simply about what I wanted out of my future employment. This was my first exposure to both working from home as well as working hybrid. Both came with several pros and cons that I can now weigh when fielding full-time offers.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I have learned that Hybrid is my favorite work style. There is a little too much isolation being completely work from home (at least when living in a small apartment). I also learned how very large companies are structured and what the leadership patterns are that govern complex organizations. This has motivated my future plans by encouraging me to aim for a large companies at the beginning of my career, but midsized companies when trying to strike more of a work life balance.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

Working for the church showed me just how much you can be prayerful about. The team was operating under a tight deadline and we were frequently invited to hit our knees and pray for guidance.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes. Excellent life-learning experience.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

I'm grateful to the team and leadership that mentored me.
