Martha Gill: Biology

Martha was a life sciences internship fellowship for BYU Life Sciences during Summer Term 2023.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

We have been looking at lower extremity health, particularly with knee injuries, but also seeing the typical joint biomechanics and bone structures in healthy populations. We are still analyzing most of the data, but one finding is that after ACL reconstruction, even after strength is regained, patients will still favor the injured leg in double leg tasks such as jumping.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned more about how to review articles and bring together relevant information for our projects we are working on. I also learned how to sit at a desk for hours on end.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

At first this internship motivated me towards doing research as a career, but by the end I have now realized that I prefer the clinical side of Physical Therapy

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

Just by going out somewhere new I was pushed to rely on God a lot more and trust that he was pushing me towards where I need to be. The entire way I got the internship was basically God pushing it into my hands and saying "Girl, you gotta go to Kentucky--PLEASE"

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I think this was a very specific internship to me, but I definitely recommend doing internships and going new places and pushing yourself to all students

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

This has been a very educational experience for me, and I have absolutely loved it. I have had just as amazing experiences with the YSA and the people I've met out here, and I think that the whole experience of something new is what I needed from this internship.
