Mandy interned for BYU College of Engineering as a news writer during Spring/Summer 2022 Semester.
Describe a day in your life as an intern.
I would collaborate with my coworkers (social media manager and videographers) on how they were covering the news that I would also interview others and write a story about. I would write copy for other projects, outside of news articles. For example, a large project I worked on was a booklet featuring the accomplishments and focuses of the Weidman Center, and the audience for this booklet was one of the college's main donors.
What industry/job specific skills did you learn?
Professional interaction and coordination, organization and planning, copywriting, professional news writing.
What is one thing you learned from this internship experience that could be applied to other settings?
I learned that I need to plan my deadlines for projects further out than what I initially think they will take. This typically aligns it with the date they are actually done by, and if they get done earlier than planned, all the better.
What was your favorite part of your internship experience?
My favorite part was forming relationships with my coworkers, all while doing work that we are passionate about.
How did this internship experience affect your future goals?
It has reinvigorated my hopes and goals to work in journalism after I graduate. By working in a professional environment and doing journalism work, it reminded me that despite the difficulties that can arise, I love doing this and want to continue on with it in the future.
How did you find your internship?
I found this job through the yjobs website.
