Logan Miller: Finance

Logan was a research analyst intern for Grandeur Peak Global Advisors during Fall 2023.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

As a junior research analyst at a small-cap public global equity firm, my responsibilities include conducting in-depth research on small-cap companies, analyzing financial data, assessing market trends, and providing investment recommendations to senior analysts and portfolio managers. I work collaboratively with the research team to gather and evaluate information on potential investment opportunities, considering factors such as company financials, industry dynamics, competitive landscape, and macroeconomic conditions. As a result of my work, the research team gained valuable insights into specific investment opportunities within the small-cap space. My contributions helped inform investment decisions, and the firm benefited from well-researched recommendations that contributed to successful investment outcomes.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I've had the opportunity to lead about a dozen calls with billion-dollar companies and their executive teams, which has provided invaluable insights into the art of modeling their earnings. It is incredible what you can learn from a company when you talk through assumptions made about the future. This experience has emphasized the importance of effective communication and the art of conveying ideas and questions concisely

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

No, but my dream job would be working as a financial analyst at Walmart (which I just got). The most important things that set me apart in this field is proficiency in financial analysis, accounting, and financial modeling. With my time at Grandeur, I have become familiar with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) as well as a solid foundation for financial analysis, including the evaluation of financial statements, identifying trends, and assessing the financial health of a company. I also think that soft skills including communication, attention to detail, and confidence are important as well.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I really have refined my skills in ways that will benefit me forever. This experience has given me the tools and skills to follow my own dreams as well as follow the Lord.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Absolutely, the skills that Grandeur Peak gives you are incredible. I have had chances to engage with fund managers and present my ideas during meetings, which have allowed me to thrive in a high-pressure environment. Second, I was eager to further develop my modeling and evaluation skills, particularly in Excel. I've made significant progress by challenging myself with Excel shortcuts. Lastly, grandeur allowed me to gain a profound understanding of financial statements.
