Laura Pacheco had an internship with the Office of Legislation and Congressional Affairs during Fall 2024.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
At my internship, I focused on developing an understanding of education policy. I collected news and social media clips for the office, wrote briefs on Congressional hearings and markups, wrote reports on webinars, and assisted staff with compiling and organizing documents to send to Congress. I learned the internal and external processes that occur in education policy. I've enhanced my writing and research skills, as well as my understanding of current events and policies.
What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I learned how to effectively network with others. This internship really focused on making connections with others as job security was not offered. I have gained more confidence in my ability to connect with others as a result.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
This internship has solidified my plans on moving forward in the public policy space. I knew I wanted to do research, but before my internship I only knew research in a university setting. This experience has allowed me to see applicable research settings outside of academia.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
