Laura was a Safety Specialist for Kiewit during Fall 2025.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
During my internship in Reno, Nevada, as a Safety Specialist Intern with Kiewit Construction, I supported occupational safety and health efforts on an active construction site by assisting with routine safety inspections, hazard identification, and the review of Job Hazard Analyses. I also helped maintain safety documentation, observed compliance with OSHA regulations, and participated in daily safety meetings and site walk-throughs. Through this experience, I gained hands-on exposure to real-world safety management practices, strengthened my ability to identify and mitigate workplace hazards, and developed a deeper understanding of how proactive safety programs contribute to injury prevention and worker protection in high-risk construction environments.
What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
One of the most unexpected lessons I learned during my internship was the importance of interpersonal communication and relationship-building in safety work. I initially expected the role to focus primarily on regulations, inspections, and compliance; however, I quickly realized that safety effectiveness depends heavily on trust, respect, and clear communication with workers and supervisors.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
As a result of this internship, my future plans have become more focused on pursuing a career in occupational safety and health within high-risk industries. The experience confirmed my interest in safety leadership roles and motivated me to seek further certifications.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
This internship inspired me by showing me how impactful safety professionals can be in real-world, high-risk environments. Seeing how proactive safety practices directly protect workers’ lives gave me a deeper sense of purpose and responsibility. I had the realization that safety is not just a requirement or checklist—it is a form of advocacy for workers’ health and well-being. This perspective strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career in occupational safety and public health.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?

The internship provided hands-on experience that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting and allowed me to apply academic knowledge to real-world situations. It also offered exposure to professional safety leadership, large-scale projects, and practical decision-making, all of which are invaluable for career preparation.
