Khallilia Wearne: Art History and Curatorial Studies

Khallilia was a Registration Department Intern for Brigham Young University during Winter 2026.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I worked in the Registration/Collections Management department documenting the location and condition of artworks in MOA collection to update and organize it. I also worked with the Museo de Arte de Ponce to deinstall their traveling exhibition, carefully packing up the artwork to send to the next location. I also unpacked, condition checked, documented, matted and framed many artworks for three current/upcoming exhibitions, one of which I installed the artwork in the gallery, being exact in my work so the public can appreciate the artwork.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned how the various departments in a museum work together and divide tasks, along with how essential the registration department is to all other departments. I learned all the many small details that go into handling artwork and prepping it for exhibitions, and how you have to be very diplomatic but firm in this job.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I want to now go back and achieve a masters, and I also have focused my goals into the direction of becoming a collections manager which was only one of a few plans for the future that I was considering before.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

This amazing experience inspired me greatly for what I want to pursue in the future, and what more experience/knowledge/schooling I may need. I was greatly inspired by my mentors as I listened to their paths and how different they can be.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I would definitely recommend this internship! My mentors were very helpful and I learned a large variety of skills that will help me be well rounded in my field, so doing this internship will give you a good feeling of what being in the registration department is like. I enjoyed the environment, and the work.
