Kaylee completed an internship with Orchard Elementary School as a teacher. Here is what she has to say about her experience:
What day-to-day tasks were part of this experience?
I planned lessons, taught lessons, collaborated with other teachers, attended resource and staff meetings, and communicated with parents about the progress of their children.
What would have better prepared you for this internship?
Because of my mission, I was behind a few semesters. I decided to do fast track which meant I was taking classes two weeks before I started teaching. I would have liked more of an opportunity to plan and prepare so that I could be ahead.
Was this experience a confirmation that you are going in the right direction, or is it a pivot to something else?
This internship was something I knew would be beneficial. It certainly felt like a baptism by fire at times, but I would choose doing this same internship over student teaching. I have been put in several situations that have pushed me to grow and to refine who I am. I have grown so much and I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to be a full time teacher with all of the support I have gotten from The McKay School and the school I am interning at this year. I know that being a teacher is the right career path. Seeing my current students improve and succeed has made all of the hard days worth it!
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
I highly recommend this internship. The most appealing thing to me, besides half salary, was knowing that I got a whole year of support in my own classroom with my very own students. It’s overwhelming at times but as I have learned to rely on others and ask for help, I have been able to learn so much about teaching.
