Katy Grendell: Family Studies

Kathryn interned as a supervisor for ACAFS - The Family Academy during Fall 2022.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned how to set better emotional boundaries between myself and my client's and their difficulties.

How have your future plans changes because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I went into my internship on the fence about if I wanted to pursue a masters degree in Marriage & Family Therapy or Social Work. This internship helped me see how much I loved working with family law and the community as a whole, which helped me solidify my desire to pursue Social Work.

One of the primary purposes of experiential learning at BYU is inviting the inspiration of the Spirit into your learning. How were you inspired during this experience?

This experience inspired me to take time to work on my own marriage and my own family. Seeing cases of highly conflictual divorce everyday is hard, but I've realized how much the gospel of Jesus Christ, when put into practice, can be a protecting factor for my family and those I love.

Would you recommend this internship to other students, why?

Absolutely. I've learned so much and have had such an amazing support team to help me in that growth.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

My internship has been one of the most impactful experiences I've had in my college experience. Not only has it helped me see where I want to go, but it's helped me apply what I'm learning in the present.
