Joseph Hovey: Communications

Joseph interned as an Athletic Communications Student Assistant for BYU Athletics during Winter 2023 Semester.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

This semester I led the strategic communications efforts for BYU Track and Field, overseeing social media management, facilitating media requests with coaches and student athletes, as well as maintaining the program's official website on byucougars.com.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

This semester I learned a lot about the importance of patient mentoring as I shared track and field communications duties with a less-experienced co-worker. I learned that I couldn't simply go about the work thinking through processes in my own head. I needed to verbalize and slowly walk through steps for effective completion. As I took the time to mentor and not just complete work as soon as possible I helped my co-worker become gradually more self-sufficient.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

Rather than change, my future plans have been affirmed after this semester's work. My resolve is now stronger to move forward with expanding my toolkit through a master's degree so I can be the more prepared when new opportunities come my way in this current part time position.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I came to BYU with an idea for who I wanted to be when my undergraduate experience ended. That idea has been molded overtime to the point where I'm pleased with a vision realized, or nearly realized as I prepare to graduate. The keys to making this vision real are first, seek mentors. Talk with your academic adviser and professors. It was through meeting and planning with professors in the School of Communications that I was led to this internship opportunity. I found that when I opened my mouth and took the time, willing mentors and guides were everywhere. Second, seek experience outside the classroom. I've learned far more during this internship than I ever could have in the classroom alone. The two experiences are essential and complement each other. I am more ready to "go forth to serve," because I seized opportunities to take my education into real world action.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?
