Jolie Erickson: Public Health

Jolie was an intern for RISE Services during Spring 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I worked for RISE Services which is non-profit organization that creates opportunities for individuals with disabilities. My role was to create those opportunities in the community for our clients. I was in charge of donation request, event planning, and reaching out to the community to find activities for our clients with disabilities. It was very fulfilling to find these opportunities/donations because it helps them have a more meaningful life than just staying home.

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned that I have grown a lot from my previous internships. Each past internship has helped me learn and be prepared for my next role.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

My future plans have changed because of my internship through my new interests of event planning. Even though my internship was a "Public Health" internship, I did a lot of marketing work for this organization. I really loved it and now I am interested in doing similar roles but still in the health field.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

My internship opened my eyes to non-profit work and also helped me to see that all of God's children no matter race or disability can have a happy life. I felt inspired to continue to serve his children in whatever future role comes my way!

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes! It is very flexible with hours and vacation time which was nice since I got married. The people were very kind and there are multiple locations across Utah!

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

One thing about my public health internship is that I don't feel like it is pushed very early in a student's freshman or sophomore year. They tag it on the end of the senior year where in reality it needs to start from day 1!
