Jared Brooksby: Juris Doctor

Jared interned for Arentfox Schiff-DC during spring/summer 2022 semester.

Describe a day in your life as an intern.

I spent my time evenly between researching, and writing up the research. I interacted face-to-face with my supervisor consistently, and attended work meetings on a weekly basis. There was plenty of work to be done, and I was busy at my desk every day.

What industry/job specific skills did you learn?

Working In the legal field, I had to learn plenty about research and concise writing. Research, writing, and communication were the main skills that I used throughout the externship.

What is one thing you learned from this internship experience that could be applied to other settings?

I was not afforded any leadership opportunities while I was at the externship, but I learned a lot about interacting with supervisors and those in positions of authority above myself. In addition to my writing skills and data compilation skills, which will be marketable across many jobs.

What was your favorite part of your internship experience?

Most of all, I enjoyed working one on one with my supervisor, and the amount of work that came with it. It was very rewarding and I learned a lot from his mentorship.

How did this internship experience affect your future goals?

This experience helped me hone in on what I would like to do throughout my career moving forward. It solidified some things that I wasn’t sure of, and reinforced some things that I already believed. All in all, it was very useful, and helped me figure out precisely where I want my career to go.

How did you find your internship?

Multiple externship opportunities were arranged through BYU’s career development office, although it was my choice to apply for the specific experience that I got.

How did this internship experience contribute to your growth?

As I mentioned, this helped me to grow as a professional, and helped me to home in on what I want to do with the rest of my career. It was an invaluable experience that helped me feel like an actual professional.

A picture of myself at the firm where I worked. It was a fantastic opportunity, one that I would happily complete again if I had the chance.
I’m grateful for my family’s support while I was working hard in DC. It was very fun to be there together and share the sights!
