Jameson W: Political Science

Jameson interned for the Utah Department for Corrections during Winter 2023 Semester.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

As an intern with UDC, I was assigned to the probation team here in Provo. I sat in on interviews, learned strategies to help people complete their probation, and went out at night for field/house visits. I even spent a night with the Fugitive Response Team, a high risk, specialized team searching for absconding and wanted State level fugitives. I toured other UDC facilities, such as a halfway house, and booked inmates into the Utah County Jail. It was incredible!

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I was able to learn about different lifestyles that people live, some of which are very unfortunate, others of which were funny, and got to interact with lots of people. I developed empathy, especially in participating in Drug Court here in Utah County.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I have been well prepared now to begin my career in law enforcement, although not with UDC. It was a great stepping stone for me to learn and see an alternate side to law enforcement before I made my final decision.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

Through my experiences I truly learned how to see people for who they are, and through their experiences.
