Student Spotlights

Isabel Mora: Social Work

Isabel was an intern for BYU Counseling and Psychological Services during Spring 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

As an intern at CAPS, I had the incredible opportunity to see students for individual therapy, help lead a workshop, help students through crises that they came to CAPS dealing with, and help connect students to mental health resources in the community. Through my time here so far, I have met with dozens of students and helped them process through difficult emotions, difficult circumstances, and learn how to better their mental health.

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I have learned so much about myself! One thing in particular that I have learned is that I have a really bad sense of time, and that I need clocks to be able to help guide me in my sessions to ensure we are using our time in therapy as efficiently as possible.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I never thought that I would want to do therapy full time, but after this experience, I have realized I would love to be able to do this for the rest of my life!

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I have seen an outpouring of inspiration from God as I have worked with His children in my capacity as a therapist. I am so privileged to be able to have a glimpse into these student's lives, and I have felt time and time again how God has led me to ask questions I never would have thought of. More than anything, I have felt the overwhelming love God has for these students and I have tried my best to embody that Christlike compassion. These experiences are deeply personal to me and to the students who I have worked with, and so I choose not to share these experiences out of respect for their privacy.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I absolutely would recommend this to other students. I feel that the training and support here are phenomenal, and because CAPS uses a short term therapy model, I am able to see a student through their entire process during my short summer internship.
