Kyli was a medical laboratory science student intern for Mayo Clinic during Fall 2023.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
I interned at the Mayo Clinic in their labs and got real life experience in transfusion medicine, chemistry, microbiology, hematology, coagulation, HLA typing, and cell therapy.
What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I did not expect to be a part of the clinic's specialty testing. Mayo has some unique labs that aren't in most hospitals, like a mycology work up bench in microbiology, and a cell therapy lab that specializes in STEM cell infusions and CAR-T cell therapy. I got to spend a few days in these departments, plus see instrumentation in their special chemistry lab, etc. that really blew my mind and gave me a lot of perspective in the expanding laboratory community.
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
I have a better understanding of the type of job I want to work. I also have received a lot of good advice in regard to the type of work experience I should seek out as a new grad.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
I learned that I can work and live anywhere I want to, as long as I establish important routines and goals to keep me healthy and happy and surround myself with people that will help me with those goals.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
YES! Mayo clinic is a wonderful place to learn and see a plethora of paths a MLS degree could lead you. Education is also one of Mayo's core beliefs, so they are a good option for many disciplines of study. If you can go, I would highly recommend looking into the Mayo Clinic as an option for any medical internship.

I am grateful for the experience offered to me and hope that many others will be able to enjoy the same educational experience I have had while here.
