Haylee Burnett: Social Work

Haylee was a clinical social work intern for Family Services during Spring Term 2023.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

As an intern with Family Services, I have had the opportunity to provide psychotherapy to a variety of clients with a variety of struggles. I have been able to see the difference that it makes when people are able to learn tools to help them become more self-reliant and cope with life’s difficulties. I’ve also gotten to work with my supervisor and other therapists to make connections with other agencies in the community to understand how we can better connect our clients to other resources that can help them.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from this experience is how much good is in the world, and particularly in this community. People always assume social work is a depressing job, and there are definitely some difficult aspects of it, but it has been so uplifting to see how many people are out there dedicating their lives to helping others in a variety of ways.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

Being a therapist has reminded me a lot of being a missionary, primarily because of how much I am turning to the Lord for guidance on how to help His children. I have definitely received that guidance and inspiration and my testimony of the Lord’s love for His children has multiplied.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I would definitely recommend this internship to other students. I received so much guidance and supervision, but I was also trusted to take on my own caseload and work with clients myself. It felt like a perfect balance of so many things for me. I learned so much more than I feel like I could’ve if I hadn’t had this internship.
