Emma Graham: Public Health

Emma was a Patient Care Tech for Intermountain Health during Winter 2026.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I had the opportunity to learn about geriatric patients’ hearts - physically and spiritually! I took care of 6-12 patients each shift I was assigned to our unit’s floor and on the shifts I was assigned to monitor cardiac telemetry, I oversaw the ECG measurements of 40+ patients at Utah Valley, American Fork, Spanish Fork, and Sevier Valley Hospitals. I learned what medications and activity can affect heart rates and rhythms, while also getting to know the individuals that became my patients, the way Heavenly Father knows them. I worked 24+ hours weekly and found that I was able to learn something new each shift and connect my experience to what I learn as a Public Health major at BYU.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned how to seek career growth in a role. I prepared my resume to represent the experiences I have been having recently.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I realized that I really like interacting with people daily, and that this is something I would need in a future career.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I learned the worth of souls and how to have empathy for others! There is a lot of pain in the world we can be Christ’s hands as we medically alleviate some of this.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I would recommend this internship because it fits the motto “Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve.”

The End of a Good Shift! This is me standing in front of the hospital helipad, where we have received patients.
I had the opportunity to briefly work on the Labor and Delivery Unit as a Scrub Technician. It was an incredible experience that I will miss!
