Emma Eastman: Editing and Publishing

Emma was an editing intern for Religious Studies Center during Winter 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I worked on various manuscripts preparing for publication by checking sources, copy editing, and making larger editing decisions as a team. We were able to send multiple publications to press on time and see the reader feedback and author appreciation for our work.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned the value of changing opinions. Editing seems to be black and white but I learned that there is room for collaboration, different interpretations, and case-by-case discussions.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I now am more interested in looking for employment with the church or with publishers that work with manuscripts that uphold my values.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

Working at the RSC is a unique opportunity because we work with manuscripts that deal with Church history, doctrine, and inspiration. Working here I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to be uplifted as I work, and I’ve learned new insights about my faith.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes! This internship is here to help you improve. The mentors trust you to learn new things and exercise judgement. I’ve been able to become a better editor through their example and by practicing new skills.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

It’s such a good environment. We have fun together but we value hard work and timeliness. It’s a good opportunity to see the whole scope of manuscript publication.
