Daphne Tan: Public Health

Daphne was an intern for BYU Emergency Medical Services during Fall 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

Through this academic internship with BYU EMS, I was able to firsthand experience the situations in which emergency medical services respond to emergency situations among their community. Not only did I have the privilege of working with BYU EMS, but I also had a brief internship with Spanish Fork Fire and EMS. I got to work and observe alongside skilled EMTs, who had a lot to teach me about skills and the field in general. The results from this is that I changed my major to Public Health from Nutritional Science because I want to be able to integrate emergency medicine and overall community health in a more efficient way. Not only this, but I also learned how to handle emergency situations professionally and in a way that's healthy for myself and others.

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I was not expecting to learn that I have such a high interest in this field of work.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

Yes, I was originally a pre-professional route, but I now want to pursue the work of a Paramedic full time instead.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I want to pursue a higher level of emergency medicine, whether it's going to paramedic school or becoming a fire medic along the way. This is because I've learned all of what it takes to be in this position, and it's something that I see myself doing long-term. Additionally, talking with the EMTs from Spanish Fork Fire and EMS, they encouraged me to seek after what I have plans to do because they have much faith in me.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes because the skills from this EMT course can be used anywhere and can be life saving.
