Dakin Rust: Accounting

Dakin was an intern for Connor Group during Spring 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I assisted accounting advisory professionals in drafting technical memos, summarizing legal documents of complex accounting transactions, and ad hoc accounting advisory assignments. I helped create deliverables to help clients have documentation for complex accounting transactions.

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I am still early on, but one thing I was not expecting to learn was how much of a variety of accounting opportunities are out there. Industries often have generalizations, but you can always find a niche opportunity that fits your lifestyle and goals if you look hard enough.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

My future plans have changed in ways I don't know yet, but I feel more open to different kinds of career opportunities in the future outside of public accounting or industry accounting.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I feel inspired about my future career! Sometimes accounting can be stressful, especially because I have often dreaded a career in public accounting. Working at CG has opened my eyes to new career opportunities and I feel some prayers about my future are beginning to be answered. I am not saying I want to end up at a certain company, but simply that I feel inspired about future possibilities.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I would highly recommend it. You work hard, get paid well, and learn a ton.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

I think the best internships are the ones that challenge you and help you apply what you have learned in school.
