Student Spotlights

Chris Fowler: Information Systems

Chris was an IT Intern for World Aquaculture Society Spring 2025.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

Throughout my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a less maintained website. I’ve been able to update packages to reduce vulnerabilities, improve the interface, handle known bugs, automate website metric reports, generate pdf reports, and more! This effort has helped both those applying for jobs in aquaculture but also the administrator that spends much of his time doing arbitrary things like printing jobs out one by one after manually editing them. With my work, he is able to print them out in one batch after filtering down to the ones he wants.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned how much I value working on a team. In this job, I work with only one other person, and we only talk a few times per week. I learned the value of having a team that you can rely on and work with.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

Originally, this internship was going to turn into my full-time job. After my experience here, I’ve decided that I want to expand my horizons and seek other opportunities where I can work on a team.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

This experience helped me to feel inspired to go forth and serve in the workplace. There is so much good to be done no matter where we go. The opportunities are endless, and we all have the ability to be Christlike leaders wherever we end up.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes! I think this internship is a great opportunity to learn problem solving skills as well as learn how to figure out complex problems on your own. After this internship, I feel more confident in understanding business processes and coding. I know it will help me in whatever job I land next.
