Hazel Larsen: Elementary Education

Hazel Larsen was a Practicum 2 Student during Fall 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I was able to go into a 5th grade classroom 2 times for 2-week periods. I learned from and observed an amazing teacher, and got lots of opportunities to teach. It is so helpful, because I think the best way to learn how to teach is by actually teaching! It impacted my life and the kind of teacher I will be. The students changed my life and I got to learn so much from them, even though I was doing the teaching. They are such special children of God, and I was so blessed to be able to get to know them.

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned that I am more capable than I thought. I was nervous about teaching full-time after I graduate, but this showed me how prepared and ready I am!

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I thought I wanted to teach younger grades, but I'm open to all grades now because of my positive experience in an upper grade classroom.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I was able to help some students who were struggling academically and in their personal lives. I prayed for them, and were able to be there for them as I was guided by the Spirit. I felt prompted many times to say certain things or help the students in ways I wouldn't have thought of on my own.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes! This is so helpful for future teachers. It's also pretty low-pressure, since you have a mentor teacher in the class at all times, and can learn so much from them!

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

It is super helpful, and I hope they continue requiring it from elementary education students.
