Bronwyn Bates: Family Life

Bronwyn interned as a school counselor at Lakeridge Jr. High during Winter Semester 2022.

Describe a day in your life as an intern.

I would go into the office and talk to the different counselors to see if they have any assignments that they need the interns to do. Once a week, we go into the Guided Studies classes and do presentations. I met with 3 students regularly to work on their academic standing. During the time of class scheduling, we would meet with individuals as well as groups of students for them to fill out the class request forms. I would also spend time inputting the paperwork online.

What industry/job specific skills did you learn?

Interviewing skills, goal setting and following up, professionalism working with students and parents, professionalism working on a team, organization.

What are three things that you learned from this experience that could be applied to other setting?

Goal setting: one skill that I used daily is understanding how to make effective goals that will help the students increase their motivation and improve.

Following Up: I found the importance of following up with students because if I do not follow up with them then they do not see the importance of it themselves.

Assertiveness: I learned how to have personal assertiveness in finding projects and getting involved in various projects and assignments.

What was your favorite part of your internship?

My favorite part of the internship was working with the students to help them improve their failing grades and help them see their potential..

How did this experience affect your future goals?

I had some interest in school counseling beforehand, but because of what I learned and experienced during this internship I am actively looking into doing a Masters degree in school counseling.

How did you get your internship?

I found it on an FHSS general email.

How did this experience contribute to your growth?

This internship helped me gain firsthand experience in a professional working environment. It gave me valuable experience that will be beneficial for future jobs. It also helped me learn personal skills like empathy and love for the students.
