Autumn Hakes: Applied Statistics and Analytics

Autumn was a finance analyst for Rocky Mountain Yeti during Spring Term 2023.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I created a year long trend of balance sheet data. I reconciled each balance sheet account to help the finance team. I also reviewed and helped compile the 2022 financial statements, as well as the mid 2023 financial statements. I also helped move forward a data automation process to get data from our software in a more efficient manner.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I did not expect to learn so much about Excel. I learned a lot of computer skills by simply doing the tasks I was assigned. I also learned how to perform month end review calls with general managers and what accounting data is important to improve sales performance. I learned how every person on a team has an important job. If one does not pull their weight, it negatively impacts the entire team, and even the company.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I am definitely more interested in finance. However, I learned that it is hard for me to sit at a desk all day long. I might look for future opportunities that get me on my feet more.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

There were definitely times on the job where I did not know how to do something. When I put my effort into a task, asked questions, and triple checked numbers, there were times when I received inspiration on what I was missing. Faith along with action led to inspired answers.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I would recommend this internship to other students because it gave me real-world experience and application. Education is important, but experience helped me develop a whole new set of interpersonal and analytical skills that will be necessary in future jobs.

This is me working on the balance sheet reconciliation process.
