Anna Lemke: Human Development

Anna was an EMT for BYU EMS during Winter 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I was a volunteer EMT, responding to emergencies on BYU campus as well as training a new EMT through a semester-long rigorous training course.

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned just how driven I am to do a good job at something even when I’m not getting paid. I realized that no matter how many times I learn some of these skills of Emergency Medicine, sometimes I never feel completely confident. So much learning is on the job!

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

I’ve solidified the fact that I don't want to work on an ambulance in the future but that I do want to incorporate my emergency medical skills into whatever career I pursue. I’m now very interested in going into medical social work.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

It was reaffirmed to me how much I absolutely love teaching and building others up, helping them reach their potential! This is definitely guiding me in choosing a career path. I also remembered how teachable I try to be and that sometimes I’m almost too hard on myself, which is something I can improve upon and take more confidence in.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

Yes! The memories, personal skills and development, and friendships you will make are invaluable.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

It is beyond incredible and has the potential to go even further!
