Amelia Cook: Exercise and Wellness

Amelia was an Activities Assistant for Alpine Rehabilitation Center during Fall 2025.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I worked as an activities assistant in a memory care facility. I helped plan and execute activities throughout the day for people with mental difficulties. We planned activities based around their spiritual, physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. My facility provided me with the means to obtain my Therapeutic Recreational Technician license through the State of Utah. Through the course and mentorship I completed, I learned how to make activities, not only fun and engaging, but therapeutic and helpful."

What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I did not expect how much I would care about the residence. Even though many of them have difficulty communicating and connecting, I could tell they were God‘s children, and that we all work together in this life. I learned a lot about how the healthcare system can assist people as they age. And also where it falls short. It makes me sad to see that so many people in there later years have so much difficulty. I am grateful that I get the chance to help them and their families.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

Yes. I found out about public health through my supervisor at my internship. Public health is in healthcare, but on the preventative side. If we can have sustainable, effective, and consistent, preventative healthcare, hopefully less people would end up in assisted living homes or rehab rehabilitation centers. They would have longer, healthier lives.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

I chose this internship because I wanted to serve people. I realized that I want my career to be focused on helping people. This helped me decide where my interest lie with my career going forward and the kind of person I want to be. I want to be the kind of person who looks after those who are forgotten, lost, scared, sick, or afflicted. That is what Jesus would do and I want to emulate him.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I would definitely recommend this internship to other students. I think it is important that people think outside of themselves and consider how people less fortunate than then live. It is important to do our part to help them.
