Alexa was a Graduate Student Clinician for Wasatch Elementary and Oak Springs during Winter 2025.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
I interned under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist to support students in the following areas: expressive language, receptive language, articulation, speech sounds/phonology, social communication, fluency, and hearing. I conducted assessments, provided treatment, and wrote reports throughout my experience at these sites.
What did you learn on your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I learned that I actually DO enjoy working with younger students! Before this internship, I thought I really only wanted to work with students about 8 years of age or older, but I realized that working with younger kids (e.g., kindergartners) is SO FUN, as well! Now, I am open to working with any age group, as I have loved it all!
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
I can totally see myself being satisfied/feeling fulfilled in my career by working as a school-based SLP long-term!
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
My experience at this internship inspired me to keep learning and growing. Witnessing my own supervisors continue to seek knowledge and improve their clinical skills was encouraging to me. There is SO much information to know in this field, and it is okay to not know it all at once. I will still obtain knowledge after grad school, and it is important to have an open mind receptive to feedback, new research findings, etc.- education never ends and that is such a beautiful thing!
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
Yes! Provo School District is awesome! My supervisor had the best suggestions, always implemented evidence-based practice into therapy sessions, and truly became one of my good friends. You will learn so much through this hands-on, fully-immersed internship!
Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?
I got to use my Spanish language skills quite often during this internship, which was a great experience for me!
