Adam was an intern for BYU during Fall 2024.
Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.
For this internship, I worked on restoring three films: How Near to the Angles, Let the Eagles Fly, and Journey. I helped identify film elements, inspect them, scan them, but I spent most of my time on this internship working on color grading each of these projects inside of DaVinci Resolve.
What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?
I was not expecting to learn so much about the origins of patterns and methods we still use in modern filmmaking. Working with celluloid film during this internship helped me understand a lot more the terminology we use for film (eg. footage is called footage because it initially referred to the number of feet of film that were shot).
How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?
I'm now considering doing a masters degree in film restoration which I didn't before.
Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.
During this internship, I realized that film restoration is an area of film that I'm really interested in and that I would like to pursue more in the future as a career. It was an eye opening experience to the fact that there's way more avenues in film that I'm interested in that I initially thought.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
Absolutely! Even if other students don't want to do film restoration as a career, if they have any interest in cinematography or color grading, this is one of the best internships they can take to improve those skills.
