Abi Falin Horspool: Journalism

Abi Falin Horspool had an editorial internship during Fall 2024.

Briefly explain what you did and the result of your internship.

I wrote and edited stories, found ideas, gathered graphics, conducted interviews, and edited podcast episodes, all while learning from experienced writers and editors around me. My work will be published in the Winter 2025 issue of the magazine. My work on podcasts is already published on streaming platforms

What did you learn in your internship that you were not expecting to learn?

I learned a lot about the editing progress and podcasting stuff.

How have your future plans changed because of what you learned from your internship experience?

It's made me more interested in the magazine industry, for sure.

Please share how your experience led to personal inspiration or insightful revelation.

One of the stories I worked on this semester was about the Mountain People Project, an organization founded by two BYU nursing professors who take nursing students along with them to places like India and Georgia to teach search and rescue medicine to doctors. They were even able to get funding from the Indian government to create the Garhwal Himalayas' first emergency medical helicopter team, and a graduate student helped train the team. They've been able to do a lot of good as they share their knowledge with others. Working for Y Magazine, it's been inspiring to me to see what BYU and its students and professors are doing around the world.

Would you recommend this internship to other students?

I definitely would. I had so many opportunities to grow and so much great mentorship.

Is there anything else you would like to say regarding your internship?

I love being a journalist because I get to hear and share others' stories and I think there's a lot of value in that. There's something to learn from everyone. This internship really helped me learn that.
