Experiential Learning is a result of reflecting on the intended and unintended consequences of applying knowledge and ideas to real world situations. David Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle is considered the foundation for modern practice of experiential education. Most models borrow from Kolb's work.

  • ABLConnect at the Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University is "an online database of active learning efforts in post-secondary classrooms." This is an excellent resource for examples of classroom based experiential learning, activities, and simple ways to implement more ExL into your current teaching.
  • The Education Development Center at Carlton University in Ottawa provides a concise definition and a variety of examples from different learning environments and disciplines.
  • The National Society for Experiential Education has outlined "eight principles of good practice" for experiential learning. Many colleges and universities consider the NSEE's principles as the foundation for their experiential learning efforts.

Assessment

  • McGill University in Montreal has put together a solid yet simple way to think about evaluating experiential learning activities with examples, models, rubrics, and strategies. This is a primer but includes a helpful set or references and additional resources: Guidelines for assessment of experiential learning.
  • Assessment Toolbox, University of Tennessee Knoxville. Effective and implementable ways to include assessment in your ExL efforts.
