Samuel Castillo participated in practicum lab research for a Dr. Yamwaki.
What type of projects did you work on as part of your experiential learning course?
I was a part of Dr. Yamawaki’s research lab for this Experiential Learning Course. We worked on a project pertaining to an increase in hate crimes toward Asians at a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was able to work on the initial literature review, help with the creation and administration of the survey, and I even helped write the manuscript which was published in an academic journal earlier this year.
what day to day tasks were part of this experience?
I met weekly with Dr. Yamawaki and weekly with the rest of the lab to work on assignments related to our project.
What did you learned unexpectedly?
I developed a stronger desire to work in the field of Psychology abs more specifically within the realm of Social Psychology. I also developed a higher drive to pursue graduate school and expand my education.
How was this experience influenced your career goals?
I have applied to a few master’s programs and am hoping to become a licensed mental health counselor or social worker. This experience helped me broaden my horizons and prepare for graduate school. Dr. Yamawaki truly helped me become a better student and a harder worker.
What types of new opportunities are now available because of the experience?
When I first came to college, I didn’t even dream of going to grad school. Because of this experience, I learned how to earn funding for myself and how to push my self to do harder things. I plan on earning a master’s degree in the next few years and am in a much better place educationally and financially because of my experience with this program.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I would encourage other to be a part of this experiment. Who knows what the future can hold for you?
