Kylie Wride participated in an on-campus internship where she worked on a marketing project for a small business in MSB 494R.
What type of projects did you work on as part of your Experiential Learning course?
I worked on a marketing project for a small business. We helped research best social media marketing practices, local vendor boutiques, and stores where the products would be a good fit. We managed the social media and the online Etsy shop and worked with a web designer to build a new website.
What day to day tasks were part of this experience?
Day to day tasks included creating social media content such as photos of the products, posts, captions, videos, etc. This also included research and talking to store buyers. Another almost daily task was brainstorming ideas for brand expansion through social media and rebranding.
What did you learn unexpectedly?
I learned just how many details go into running a small business! There were always surprises that we would have to adjust to. I also learned the importance of utilizing key words for search engine optimization (SEO).
How has this experience influenced your career goals?
This experience definitely inspired me to consider small business. I was able to see first-hand just how labor intensive a small business is, but also just how rewarding it can be. It also inspired me to be my own creative and finally open up an Etsy shop!
What is one thing you wish you had known before starting?
I wish I had known how to better communicate with our sponsors at the beginning of the project to really understand their needs. I felt like the whole project was very ambiguous at first and I wish we would have been more direct with the sponsors in figuring out what the were expecting from us instead of us just pitching a plan to them. (Some of the things in our original pitch we had to remove because we found out that previous internship groups had already completed those deliverables.)
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I believe there is a project for everyone! My project really inspired me to consider future opportunities in business although I am not a business major! I would encourage anyone looking for experience to try an OCI. You will not regret it.
