Student Spotlights

Erin Matthews: Mathematics Education

Erin Matthews experienced practicum through student teaching in MTHED 476.

What type of projects did you work on as part of your Experiential Learning course?

I was student teaching, so every day of the semester I worked full time in a high school math classroom! This is what I have been looking forward to through my entire education!

What day to day tasks were part of this experience?

Planning lessons, collaborating with other teachers in the department (I really felt they treated us as equals and valued our input!), grading, and most importantly one on one support to students who were willing to work!

What did you learn unexpectedly?

I learned how many students are lacking basic understandings of mathematics and how much I as a teacher can impact their understanding.

How has this experience influenced your career goals?

This experience really helped me to create more realistic expectations and goals for what a career in education can look like. All the classes at BYU have prepared me for ideal situations, and this experience helped me balance those idealized principles with the day to day realities and time constraints of teaching.

What types of new opportunities are now available because of the experience?

I feel fully qualified for virtually any math teaching job! I will graduate and receive my teaching license because of this experience.
