Chris Althoff has been working with a book that we all know very well: Encyclopedia Britannica needs our help in compiling resources and Chris was the man to do it!
What was your internship experience?
I've been working with Western Standard for about ten months now. We've been creating a digital library of classic books and primary documents to be used in a website we are building for Encyclopedia Britannica called Britannica Original Sources. We are building the website to be used by schools who want their students to have a safe, clean location to search and read the many resources we are providing. I have enjoyed my time at Western Standard because it seems like everyday there is another new project for me to be working on. I have had the opportunity to write short synopsis of classic books and historical documents as well as biographies of historical figures from all around the world. Another project I've be a part of is the converting and formatting of .txt files into eBooks. Through these experiences I have been able to gain a basic knowledge of HTML and other programming languages. It has been a great opportunity to learn in subjects in which I never thought I'd have an opportunity to gain experience. Western Standard is a small company that has a lot of potential to grow, and I have been privileged to be a part of their organization.
Would you recommend this internship to other students?
I would recommend working with Western Standard. They have a great project, are nice and close to campus, and have been very understanding and flexible to work with my schedule as a student. Though I learned many useful skills, the most useful thing I learned was how to communicate with my co-workers to know what expectations were and to be sure we were all on the same page about the each part of a project.
