Brittany Burnside: Plant & Wildlife Studies

What type of projects did you work on as part of your Experiential Learning course?

I studied genetics in fruit flies.

What day to day tasks were part of this experience?

Making plates, rearing flies, sorting flies by gender, loading them into testing equipment, making fly food, and doing dishes.

What did you learn unexpectedly? 

I learned how to understand and interpret scientific data and how to apply for grants.

How has this experience influenced your career goals? 

I already had career goals going into this, but the experience made me better-equipped to meet them.

What types of new opportunities are now available because of the experience?

Presentations at conferences (including trips to conferences in California), grants, and opportunities to improve my grad school applications.
